The day started off cloudy and muggy. The agreed upon meeting spot was the Enumclaw Safeway parking lot. Evan, John V., Michael and 2 youngins, Gary T., Nate, Jesse and Debbie H., Malachi and Melissa, candidates Gary and Page, and of course, myself and Brenda. After a brief run by several members to get last second snacks at the Safeway, we headed out on Hwy 410 for Buckley and the turnoff to Wilkeson. Of course, you cannot have a Tamer run without a Tamer Turnaround, or in this case, just a Tamer Turn! Just a slight navigational error by the Jeep Nav system (and I’m sticking to that story), a quick map read, and we just decided a small tour of some of Buckley’s historical district was in order, enroute to Wilkeson.
Upon arrival in Wilkeson, we decided to head on to Carbonado and the historic Carbonado Saloon. We soon swamped the saloon, enjoyed the ambiance of the 1889 built building, and enjoyed a beverage. We were thanked by the Bartender/Manager, for supporting their business, and were off again, this time to see the road closure just a short hop down the highway. This blockage is far enough away from the bridge to prevent picture taking. After a short break to allow our 4-legged furry children to establish territory, we headed for the coke ovens in Wilkeson. We spent a good amount of time there, seeing how the ovens were used to heat up the ore to extract the good stuff.
From there, we went to downtown Wilkeson (ok, just down the road), and got ready for some incredible pizza at Carlson Block Pizza. This place must be world famous, as customers were lining up half an hour before opening! Some of us decided ice cream was in order, partook of some yummy flavors prior to the pizza. Once seated in the pizza parlor, and we were served our orders, you could see, smell, and taste why this place is so popular. The sourdough crusts, wood-fired cooking, and ingredients were just out of this world! A trip to Wilkeson just for this pizza is definitely worth the drive! From here, we separated and went our individual ways, knowing we had shown the community that we care, and it was great hearing the thanks from the staff as we headed home.
